Who made Seedance?

Seedance was created by ByteDance Seed, the AI research organisation inside ByteDance, the Beijing-headquartered company best known for TikTok and Douyin. This page answers the ownership questions people search for, points to the primary sources, and explains how third-party platforms, including this one, fit in.

The short answer

Seedance is a ByteDance model. It is researched, trained and published by ByteDance Seed, and the official model pages, launch posts and technical descriptions are hosted on seed.bytedance.com. ByteDance owns the models and decides how they are distributed. Nobody else, including Seedancee, can claim to be the maker or the official home of Seedance.

What ByteDance Seed is

ByteDance Seed is ByteDance's AI research arm. It publishes a range of foundation models across language, vision, speech and video, and Seedance is its video generation line. Seed maintains public model pages with release announcements and capability descriptions, which is where the facts on this site are checked against. When a new Seedance version launches, the announcement appears there first.

Release history from official announcements

ByteDance publicly launched Seedance 2.0 on 2026-02-12 and Seedance 2.5 on 2026-07-31. The 2.5 launch post is titled "One-take creation, flexible referencing: introducing Seedance 2.5" and frames the release around 30-second storytelling, precise reference control and editing. Earlier versions (1.0 and 1.5 Pro) predate 2.0; we do not list dates for them because we could not confirm them from a primary source at the time of verification. The full dated list, with what changed in each version, is on our release timeline.

How Seedance reaches users

ByteDance does not sell Seedance as a standalone app. The official 2.5 page names three access channels: the Dola chat interface, the BytePlus Playground (BytePlus is ByteDance's international enterprise cloud brand), and an API for developers. Alongside those, third-party API providers license the models and resell access. Kie.ai is one such provider and exposes Seedance 2.5, 2.0, 2.0 Fast, 2.0 Mini and 1.5 Pro; Seedancee is built on Kie.

Why the 'who owns Seedance' question matters

People ask about ownership for practical reasons: data handling, jurisdiction, and whether the models will remain available. Here is what we can say honestly.

  • Data: when you generate on Seedancee, your prompt and references are sent to our provider (Kie.ai), which runs the ByteDance model. Our privacy policy describes retention on our side; the provider's retention is described in their terms and, at the time of verification, outputs are kept by the provider for 14 days before expiring (we copy outputs to our own storage).
  • Availability: model availability depends on ByteDance and the provider. We show the status of every model on our status page and record when a model is degraded or removed.
  • Ownership of outputs: subject to our terms and the provider's terms, you own the videos you generate, but you are responsible for what you generate. Our copyright page explains the limits.

Common confusions

  • Dreamina and CapCut are ByteDance consumer products that may surface ByteDance video models; they are not Seedance itself, and we do not document their internals.
  • Seedance and Seedream are different Seed model lines: Seedream is image generation, Seedance is video generation.
  • Sites with 'seedance' in the domain are not automatically official. Check whether the page carries an independence disclosure, as ours does, and whether primary sources are cited.
