Seedance vs Runway

Runway is one of the longest-standing companies in AI video and sells a full creative suite, not just a model. Seedance is a model family from ByteDance Seed that platforms like Seedancee wrap in a workspace. Comparing them means comparing a model with verified capabilities against a product whose value is partly its tooling. This page does that honestly: Seedance facts from the registry, Runway described in general terms, and a plan for dated side-by-side tests.

What Seedance offers (from the registry)

Seedance is ByteDance Seed's video model family. On Seedancee you can use Seedance 2.5 (launched 2026-07-31) and Seedance 2.0 (launched 2026-02-12) plus the 2.0 Fast, 2.0 Mini and 1.5 Pro variants. The current flagship generates 4–30s clips at 480p, 720p, 1080p, accepts up to 30 images, 10 videos, 10 audio clips, produces native audio with lip sync, and supports editing and extending a finished clip. Seedance 2.0 generates 4–15s clips at up to 4k with up to 9 images, 3 videos, 3 audio clips. Both are on Seedancee's Pro plan; the 2.0 Fast, 2.0 Mini and 1.5 Pro variants are also on Starter, from $4.99 a week, at up to 720p and 10-second clips.

What Runway is

Runway is a New York-based AI research and product company that has shipped video tools for years, well before the current generation of text-to-video models. Its Gen series of video generation models powers a browser-based creative suite with generation, editing, motion and image tools, aimed at filmmakers, agencies and studios as well as individual creators. Runway also offers API access for developers.

Runway's positioning leans on professional workflow: project organisation, fine-grained controls over motion and camera, and integration of generation with editing in one interface. The company has publicised partnerships with entertainment and media organisations, which reflects its studio-oriented focus.

Runway's models are closed and hosted, with no public weights. Model versions and their capabilities change regularly, so we do not restate Runway specifications here; a Lab comparison will name the Runway model and date tested.

Where the approaches differ

The table contrasts how each product is positioned and accessed. It deliberately avoids numbers for the competitor; those belong in dated test results, not in a static table.

How Seedance Lab will compare them

Our benchmark programme runs fixed prompts at fixed settings and publishes every output with its generation date. For a fair comparison with Runway, we run the same canonical prompt and, where the product allows, the same duration, aspect ratio and audio setting, then score both with the same rubric. Results are added to this page as they are produced; each result carries its date so you can see whether it predates a model update. The tests most relevant to this comparison are:

  • Camera-motion vocabulary: Runway markets camera control; the test scores six named moves under identical prompts.
  • Same image across models: image-to-video fidelity is core to both products.
  • Character consistency: measured with original references, scored identically.
  • Complex motion: multi-stage physical action under a fixed prompt.

Until those runs exist, this page makes no claim about which model produces better video. Anyone who tells you otherwise without dated, reproducible outputs is guessing.

Decision framework

Choose Runway when

  • You want generation and editing in one suite and are willing to standardise your pipeline on it.
  • Your team already uses Runway's project tools and controls and the switching cost outweighs any model difference.
  • Your own dated tests show Runway's current model handling your subject matter better.

Choose Seedance on Seedancee when

  • You need 30-second single takes with edit and extend on the model itself.
  • You steer with many references per job: up to 30 images, 10 videos and 10 audio clips on Seedance 2.5.
  • You want native audio with lip sync and reference audio for voice or rhythm.
  • You need Seedance 2.0's 4K output for a short shot.
  • You prefer credit pricing shown before each job and want to export clips into the editor you already use.

Many teams use more than one model. A reasonable workflow is to draft where iteration is cheapest, then produce the final clip on whichever model handles the specific requirement (length, references, resolution, audio) best. Seedancee's credit estimate before each job makes the cost side of that decision visible.

How to run your own comparison

  1. 01

    Pick one prompt

Use a Lab canonical prompt or write one with the six-part framework from our prompt guide. Do not tune it per model.

  2. 02

    Match settings

Same duration, aspect ratio and audio setting on both products as far as each allows. Note any setting you could not match.

  3. 03

    Generate three times each

One clip tells you about luck; three tell you about the model.

  4. 04

    Score with a rubric

Adherence, camera, stability, look. Write the scores down before you look at the other product's results.

  5. 05

    Record dates and versions

Both products update. A comparison without dates expires silently.

Perguntas frequentes

Is Seedance better than Runway?

Runway is a suite and Seedance is a model, so the honest comparison is model versus model at matched settings, which Seedance Lab will publish with dates. This page does not claim a winner.

Who makes Runway?

Runway AI, a New York-based company that has built video tools for years and develops its own Gen series of models. Seedance is made by ByteDance Seed.

Can I use Runway's models on Seedancee?

No. Seedancee runs Seedance models through Kie.ai. Additional models would be listed in the registry and on the status page.

Does Seedancee have editing tools like Runway?

Seedance 2.5 supports edit and extend at the model level, and the Seedancee workspace provides projects, assets and chaining via last frame. It is not a full non-linear editor; export to your editor for cutting and grading.

Which is cheaper?

Runway sells subscription tiers with generation allowances. Seedancee sells Starter and Pro subscriptions that add credits each period, and charges credits per job with the estimate shown up front. Compare a concrete job on both.

Do both generate audio?

Seedance 1.5 Pro, 2.0 and 2.5 generate native audio with lip sync. For Runway's current audio features, consult Runway's documentation.
