Is Seedance open source?

No, as far as we can verify. ByteDance Seed publishes Seedance as a hosted model reached through official channels and licensed API providers; we have found no public release of the model weights, training code or inference code. This page explains what that means in practice, why 'open source' is a specific claim, and how to spot sites that misuse the phrase.

What we checked

On 2026-09-29 we reviewed the official Seedance 2.5 and 2.0 pages and the 2.5 launch post. They describe capabilities and access channels (the Dola chat interface, BytePlus Playground and an API) but do not link to model weights, a code repository or a licence for local use. If ByteDance releases weights in future, this page will be updated with the source and date.

What 'open source' would actually mean

For an AI model, 'open source' is often used loosely. It helps to separate the layers, because a model can be open at one layer and closed at the others:

API access versus local execution

With a hosted model, the provider runs the weights on its GPUs and you send prompts and references over an API. You never see the weights, you pay per generation, and the provider can update or moderate the model. With a locally run open model, you download the weights, need capable hardware, and are responsible for everything from safety filtering to legal compliance. Seedance today is only in the first category.

  • Cost model: usage-based (credits or per-job billing) rather than hardware you own.
  • Control: you cannot fine-tune Seedance or change its safety behaviour; you can only steer it through prompts and references.
  • Availability: depends on ByteDance and the provider; Seedancee publishes model status so you are never guessing.
  • Privacy: your inputs are sent to the provider. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and for how long.

Why closed video models are common

Frontier video models are expensive to train and serve, and their outputs carry misuse risk (impersonation, non-consensual imagery, copyrighted characters). Keeping the weights hosted lets the developer enforce moderation and update the model. That does not make it wrong to wish for open weights; it explains why most current flagship video models, Seedance included, are offered as services.

Your actual options

  1. 01

    Use Seedance through a workspace

Seedancee provides all current Seedance variants with references, audio and storage. No hardware, no keys to manage.

  2. 02

    Use Seedance through an API

ByteDance's official API channel or a provider such as Kie.ai, or the Seedancee API (early access; part of the Pro plan once API access is switched on) if you want credits, storage and moderation handled.

  3. 03

Use a different, genuinely open video model

If local execution is a hard requirement, look for models that publish weights and a licence. We do not rank them here; this site is about Seedance workflows.

How to read 'open source Seedance' claims

  • Ask for the repository and the licence file. If neither exists, it is not open source.
  • Check the model card: an unrelated model renamed 'Seedance' will usually reveal its origin in the config.
  • Be suspicious of installers, .exe files and Telegram links.
  • Check the date: a claim without a date is not verifiable.

FAQ

Can I download Seedance model weights?

Not as far as we can verify. ByteDance has not published Seedance weights. Files claiming to be Seedance weights should be treated as unverified and potentially unsafe.

Can I run Seedance locally on my GPU?

No. Without public weights and inference code there is nothing to run locally. Seedance is used through hosted channels and APIs.

Is Seedance on Hugging Face or GitHub?

We found no official Seedance weights or code on public model or code hosts at the time of verification. Official information lives on seed.bytedance.com.

Is there an open-source alternative to Seedance?

Several video models do publish weights. We do not evaluate them here; our comparisons cover hosted models that compete with Seedance in practice.

Can I fine-tune Seedance on my own footage?

No. Hosted access does not include fine-tuning. Reference images, video and audio are the supported way to steer identity, motion and sound.

Will this page change if ByteDance opens the model?

Yes. The verification date at the top is updated whenever we re-check the sources, and any release would be added with a link.
